This week’s student government news including stories on tuition breaks for veterans, efforts to increase campus safety, and a project to make a campus more bike-friendly.
In-State Tuition for Veterans
Florida State University’s Student Government Association visited the State Capitol to show their support for a bill that would grant in-state tuition at public colleges to veterans who were honorably discharged from the military. FSU has previously declared that it aims to be the most veteran-friendly university in the country.
Financial Education for Students
Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association, in partnership with the campus library system, has launched the Student Financial Education Center, a financial literacy program. At the Center, student Peer Educators provide financial counseling to students in need.
New App for Campus Safety
Northwestern University’s Associated Student Government released a new mobile app for the campus SafeRide program. The app allows students to request a ride from the program and is meant to reduce wait times and improve service for users.
Preparing for a Smoke-Free Campus
The Student Government at Louisiana State University is debating how to respond to a new state law that requires the campus to be smoking-free beginning in August 2014. The student government now must decide whether to also ban all forms of tobacco from the campus.
Promoting Bike Use on Campus
The University of Florida Student Government purchased two bike stations to place on campus, to allow students to make bike repairs on the go. Each station contains tools that students can use to do their own basic bike maintenance and repairs.
