Class announcements are one of the most effective recruitment tactics you can use to identify potential volunteers for your student government. Here are some tips on how to do them. What you need:
  • A class announcement “script”
  • Student government “interest cards”
  • Professors to let you make the announcements
  • You and other student government members to actually make the announcements
A typical class announcement outline:
  • Introduce yourself and your organization
  • Describe one issue that the student government is working on
  • Describe what the student government is doing about it
  • Ask everyone to get involved by signing an interest card
  • Tell them why you got involved in student government
An example:
  • INTRO: My name is Sarah and I’m from the Student Government Association, the official voice of the students here at State University.
  • ISSUE: This semester we’re working to get the whole campus registered to vote. Politicians are debating a ton of issues that affect students, and we need to vote if we want them to take our interests seriously. That’s why we’re making sure every student is ready to go out and vote.
  • WHAT WE’RE DOING: Here at State University, our goal is to help 1,000 students register to vote this spring. We’ll hold a lot of fun events, including a Vote-a-Palooza Concert.
  • ASK: We’ll need a lot of volunteers to make this happen, so fill out the interest card I passed out if you want to get involved.
  • WHY YOU GOT INVOLVED: I got involved in SGA because I wanted to make a difference in my community. I got the chance to work on important issues, learn new skills, and make a lot of friends. That’s why I encourage you to get involved too.
How to schedule class announcements: To schedule class announcements, you need to contact professors. Here are the primary ways to do so:
  • Email professors
  • Call professors
  • Swing by professors’ offices
  • Just show up before a class starts and ask the professor if you can speak
